History

Construction of the Silverdome started on the site in 1984 and the venue was opened in March 1985. The Silverdome was the Southern Hemisphere's first indoor timber cycling velodrome. It was built at a cost of $4 million dollars to the Tasmanian Government. The track is constructed of Tasmanian Oak and is one of just a few hardwood tracks in Australia.

In 1997, the Tasmanian Institute of Sport moved its administration to the Silverdome and now uses its facilities and track to support its elite cycling program. Tasmania has produced many elite cyclists since this time, all of who learnt their trade at the Silverdome.

The Silverdome was managed by the Tasmanian International Velodrome Management Authority as a Government Business Enterprise until 2007, when the Tasmanian Government took over management through the Department of Premier and Cabinet. In May 2025, ownership and operations were transferred to Stadiums Tasmania.
